Riverside Meals on Wheels provides nutritious meals to seniors and housebound adults who fall under one or more of the following categories:
Have difficulty or are unable to safely prepare nutritious meals for themselves;
Essentially confined to their places of residence; and/or
Have little or no assistance to obtain adequate nutrition.
Riverside Meals on Wheels delivers one ready-to-eat meal between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Meals are delivered in person to the client's home.
The balanced nutritious meal consists of a protein, starch, vegetable, fruit, and 2% milk or fruit juice. Non-fat milk is available upon request. Menus are formulated for senior nutrition, and the general diet is low salt, low fat, and low cholesterol.
Meals can be prepared to meet many special dietary requirements, including diabetic and vegetarian options.
Hot meals are delivered in a resealable, microwaveable container. Meals can be left in an ice chest with a cold pack, if provided.
Personalized service includes contact with a friendly, caring driver. We check on our clients' well-being and notify emergency contacts about any concerns or anything different from the normal routine.
In the 1960s, members of the First United Methodist Church in Riverside, California, began preparing and delivering meals to housebound seniors in their neighborhood.
As the number of people requesting meals increased steadily, the group realized that a formal program was needed to ensure that services would be continued beyond their tenure.
In 1972, Riverside Meals on Wheels was established. As a local 501(c)3 nonprofit volunteer organization, we depend on private donations to support the meal program.
Our mission is to provide nutritional assistance to help people remain independent in their own homes as long as possible. Riverside Meals on Wheels provides not only a home-delivered meal, but regular contact with a friendly, caring driver.
Our program is unique in that we offer special dietary options, including diabetic and vegetarian meals. The meals are prepared by contracted food providers to ensure the highest standards of quality, safety, and variety. Our meals are prepared prepared at the Raincross Cafe located inside Riverside City Hall.
